The 24th annual 2011 FTA Congress in review
Over 300 senior finance and treasury executives attended the Congress titled "Embracing the Volatility Wave - Treasury Vital role" which featured a number of keynote speakers covering a range of topics facing the boards and management of Australian companies in meeting their strategic and financing needs.
The Congress was themed around the volatile environment in the treasury markets and how many of our members have adapted to it. As foreshadowed at last year‘s Congress, treasurers have played a central role in the emergence from the global financial crisis and again we draw on our member experiences to highlight some of the issues and developments that continue to feature in today’s markets.
In particular we examined the state of global and local finance markets, Basel III what does it mean for Treasurers, the evolution of treasury risk management systems, insurance, commodity risk management conditions and updates on accounting standards as well as recent capital management initiatives.
As per the 2010 Congress we included a stream for public sector finance & treasury professionals. This created a greater opportunity for all members to get together and share their experiences in managing the new normal at a time when government finances are at the fore of market debate. Can public sector infrastructure be met through current borrowing mechanisms, what are the dos and don’ts in public sector treasury operations? And what are best practice risk management techniques in this sector.
The social events were a highlight, with Australian Olympic swimming champion Kieren Perkins OAM presenting an inspiring speech on the ups and downs of his career and thoughts for members in their everyday lives at the Gala Dinner sponsored by Gold Partner NAB. Kieren was supported by Queensland's funny man the Doctor Scott Williams. The welcome reception held on the Tuesday evening at Sydney's historic Rocks was a great way for delegates to catch up and network with one another.

2012 FTA Congress
We look forward to welcoming members, sponsors and non-members to the 25th annual Silver Jubilee Congress to be held in Melbourne on Thursday-Friday 1-2 November with a welcome reception on Wednesday 31 October.
